dancin
ahoy, our new dance move

Calling all ice ball throwers, snow angle makers, fire place dwellers, and icicle lickers!

We would like to put out a formal apology for the false information regarding the last show we played being the last Michigan show of 2005. Alas something climbed into Sarah's tummy and roughed it up before the show so Kate went it alone and did a fabulous job.

But lucky for you and us we found another show and A ONE MAN BAND to truly conclude our first year of formal duo-ship. It is almost our anniversary, so come out and celebrate!! (we are registered at Target and Linens and Things)

Friday December 9
9:30 pm / xhedos cafe / $8
240 w. 9 mile / Ferndale, MI
wsg, our one man band,
Nicholas Koby

we have: a new cd, new songs, new choreography, and new bassist!

Also playing: joe reilly
(of the long hairz collective)

Watch out where the huskies go, don't you eat that yellow snow!

We are writing to you from the underground….

thrashing like rock stars

There have been a few events that have led us to have to seek asylum in an undisclosed town in an undisclosed state that may or may not look like a mitten.

Kate Peterson and Sarah Cleaver have assumed alternate identities, purchased outfits from our neighborhood Halloween costume outlet, and headed to a cabin somewhere perhaps far far away or perhaps in your city. (by the way its time to mix your compost it is starting to smell funky). We were very thankful Halloween fell when it did cause people were starting to stare when we would go the store. I think it was really Kate’s incessant singing of “If I Could Turn Back Time”  but she insists it's part of the outfit.

holding up the bottom end with lazy sunday

So what are you wondering could force us into hiding?  You guessed it… unconscionable frolicking.  Every time we would step outside our house we would be so overcome by the beauty of the changing trees, the brisk autumn air, and the need to hacky sack that we would become wild beasts.  Frolicking with a vengeance everywhere we could. Romping through the leaves, singing to the trees, hacky sacking in unauthorized areas.  We became out of control…and the law knew it.  They sent us away to let the victims of our reckless frolicking recooperate and insisted that we undergo a self help program.

It has been two weeks and many hours of Dr. Phil cassettes teaching us, “Trees are our friends but all friends need boundaries.” We believe we have paid our dues and are ready to hit the road and engage in controlled frolicking with the trees in your neighborhood, at a respectful distance that is.

We have some a new Live EP, new songs, some great friends to share shows with, and a brand new hacky  sack. So come on out and join us for some fall merriment!!

<The following text meant to be spoken in hushed voices like those used while hunting crocodiles with slingshots in the outback. We could all also be wearing sheer tan colored clothing and hats with protective nets to shield us from malaria carrying bugs and the grueling sun if that helps you get in the right mind set. Your other senses are telling you that it is day 14 of this adventure without showers but the scent of OFF Spring Fresh bug repellant is making these close quarters bearable.>

We join up with our traveling duo once again in the back country of Pennsylvania where they lay quietly in some thick highway brush patiently waiting for their cooler to drain. Since our last chance encounter with these endangered road warriors they have traversed the Mississippi River taming beasts large and small with their melodious voices and awkward charm.

They wrestled with the long nights along the mighty mighty Mississippi's banks with the ease of Lewis and Clark and look forward to continuing to test their cat like reflexes as they head north to wild kingdom of New York City.

we fell in love with minnesota

We have been out of the warm mitten of Michigan for a few weeks now and have played some marvelous shows in the Midwest and the Southland where we continue to be amazed at the generous and wonderful people that we meet and share music with.

We are continuing north to roll around in the autumn leaves and frolic in some big cities before heading back to the wooly mitten to welcome the fall there.

Please COME OUT and see us!

9/6/05

Sarah and I have spent a month on sabbatical, away from the warm embraces and melodic congruencies of each other and have reunited in the bosom of the Michigan mitten. Because our fair state still will not allow non-romantical life mates to marry, we have decided to take our own more formal steps toward folk duo unification. This process is shockingly like marital bliss, without the frolicking around the neighborhood with a big rocks on our fingers singing, "I am Jenny from the Block" while flashing the bling around.

We have united email listings for the long haul, or at least until one of us runs away to join the nunnery with Julie Andrews singing "the hills are alive" while twirling our skirts around. Thank god we both look fabulous in black.

We are jumpin out of our trousers in excitement because we will be seeing you all again soon!!! Our longest tour yet is approaching and we hope that you are waiting with batted breath to witness our new songs, circus routines and merchandise in the flesh. So check the calendar for the best place for us to rendezvous with you.

Look for more a more unified website coming soon!

5/12/05

well folks, we've got ourselves a brand new website! who is this collective we i am speaking of? thats a good question... please tell me what you think!

5/09/05

hello friends!

it is my pleasure to greet you on this sunny day.

sarah and i have played a crapload of shows in the last week and we have something to show for it. (aside from sore muscles - a result of the ladder we had to climb for the port huron gig) click here for a live cut of moonshiner - mp3 style.

the shows last week with chris pureka and ellis were tons of fun... we expect it to continue! we would also like to make a special shout out to merrill garbus - our new favorite fiddle player with the oh-so-flashy plaid pants. she brightened all of our weeks.

we are busy booking pride festivals for june - basically as many outdoor events as we can wrap our arms around. sarah has developed a new love for rolling sideways down steep hills and cant stop hopping curbs on my huffy. anyway, we'll let you know when our rainbows start sailing.

in the meantime, we've got shows this week in lansing, ann arbor, mishawaka, IN (south bend area), and chicago. details here!

my best as always...

kate

howdy people!

the snow from this weekend's surprise blizzard has melted... it's sunny and springy {again}. hence: easier to avoid/deny the intense reminders that the ozone layer/mama nature is pretty pissed off at us.

each year i become more aware of how the changes in the air affect my mind and body. i can't wait to listen to music outside. i cant wait to play music outside. i've seen some amazing shows in the last couple weeks... it's really gotten my blood pumping... in conjunction with the fact that singing brings me more solace every day. particularly singing with ms. sarah cleaver, who seems to hold within her a very large portion of my {music making puzzle}...

we have been working on our biggest tour yet... our plan: ·connecting·the·dots· within the majority of the eastern half of this country in a circular like motion to the tune of 2 months of fall colors. hell yeah.

in regards to shows coming up :
mon may 2
: lansing
// wed may 4: chicago
i think i must have sold a few dozen people on the music of chris pureka ... her cd, driving north, is one of those records that you can't stop listening to... even if you are starting to feel borderline unhealthy about it.

needless to say, i am speaking from experience, people.

the point is... you should click the links and check it out, or make your way out to a show because we will be sharing the stage. all details here!

not to mention a show next week (5/5) in lansing opening for the always fabulous Ellis!

my best as always...

kate

Undone is done! It's out of my hands!

read more about it or listen to a few tracks....

what a fabulous day.

11/09/04

{greetings} friends!

it's monday and it's already been a fabulous week! i'm sitting at this computer and can hardly type because Al Green's Love and Happiness is cosmically connecting to my muscles inspiring them to bounce uncontrollably. and i'm being totally serious.  i hope at some point that you can say the same for yourself.

yesterday i finished a song that's been on the verge for a few months, and today i spent the afternoon with my dear friend alex wilson, who graced 4 songs on my new cd with his super-slick hand-drumming skills. it's just keeps getting better - for instance, the cello, compliments of ms. rachel alexander, is to be added next. and of course we can not forget the vocal stylings of ms. sarah cleaver, who will also be licking her lips in preparation to record a cut of harmonica in E flat.

these are a couple new shows just added this week: including an opening slot for Edie Carey and a pub show in portland. a pub show in portland, that sounds like a lyric. have a look at the rest of them on the gigs page.

Wednesday, Nov 10
Acoustic House Concert with Edie Carey
1110 E. Saginaw Lansing, MI (5th house east of Pennsylvania Ave.)
7 PM - $10-15 sliding scale (i hear there will be beer available ;)
Email shalynn319@comcast.net  for directions or call 517-410-9644
Parking is available 1/2 block past house on right and will be marked.

Wednesday, Nov 18
Mississippi Pizza Pub (website
)
3552 North Mississippi Ave / Portland, OR

with Sarah Cleaver

take care,
my best as always -

hellofriends.

you haven't heard from me for a little while.

i wish i could say that i was on sabbatical, running through piles of red, orange and yellow leaves and throwing them joyfully in the air like a small child.

alas, i've been BUSY. life is about to explode for me with several extremely festive events, otherwise known as:
  1. shows - i'm opening for two nationally touring women artists in november who, up until now, i have enjoyed only from the audience
  2. the new cd + mp3s - due in december, pre-orders and sneak peeks
  3. the tour - jan-feb = north carolina, atlanta, and the whole big midwest
the list follows.....

{shows} big ones

Wednesday, Oct 26
Allen Neighborhood Center
Festival (website)
1619 E. Kalamazoo St. / Lansing, MI
it's FREE, and from 5:45 - 6:15, I'll be playing songs with my partna-n-crime, Ms. Sarah Cleaver.

Tuesday, Nov 2
please vote for CHANGE

Saturday, Nov 13
Women in the Arts Festival (website)
Opening for Toshi Reagon!
Edgewood United Church / 469 N Hagadorn / East Lansing, MI
7 PM - $20

Saturday, Nov 28
Magdalena's Teas House (website)
Opening for Ellis!
2006 E. Michigan Ave/ Lansing, MI
8 PM - $8

{the new cd} wanna pre-order it?
you have no idea how i wish i could type in the title of the album instead of constantly referring to it as "the new cd." it's on the tip of my tongue, really, it is.

december is the goal. i am taking pre-orders now in person, on my website and by mail.

so here's the deal: $ from pre-orders help pay for the recording and the duplication - a sweet chunk of change. and i need your help.
why would you want to pre-order you ask yourself? there are a couple reasons i can think of:

1, you will be supporting independent arts and that feels good
2, you get a real good deal: the price is $15, but i promise not to turn you away, please just pay what you can
C, if you preorder between now and november 30, you'll get a free 4 song acoustic sampler with a special bonus track of the Libby Kirkpatrick cover, Crying.

ordering options:
- here is where you can preorder with your credit card OR paypal account
- if you are into snail mailing, please send a check or MO to the following address: kate peterson, 123 Clifford St. Lansing, MI 48912
- come and find me, and i will take your money!
{the tour} a torch song evolution

just a little announcement that my afore mentioned PNC (partna-n-crime) Sarah Cleaver and I will be embarking on a little journey that we are calling the torch song evolution tour: where we will infuse old-soul folk with aggressive abandon. in non-promotional terms, this means we will attempt to bridge gaps between old and new by singing folk songs written by those that have gone before us.
we'll be hitting up north carolina, atlanta, and most of the mid-west in jan-feb 05. heads up! there's more to come.

{closing} the end

if you read all of that, i thank you. i don't mean to overwhelm. who knew i could be so wordy.

i hope you are well and that you have thrown some leaves in the air recently.

peace, and please vote!

my best as always...........kate

{hey friends}

{thank you}
for the past few days i've been finding myself feeling extremely grateful. even more so than usual! this summer has been pretty major for me - since it's been warm i've gotten to play lots and lots of music for lots and lots of people. and thanks to so many generous people who helped me get to the michigan womyn's music festival, i was able to suck as much goodness out of the week as i imagine was humanly possible.

{festival}
good karma? i don't know - but my name was picked to play for 10 minutes in front of a couple hundred women who did not speak a word while i sang. and it was possibly one of my best sets ever, if not just a damn good time.
highlight of the week: a women i had never met says as we cross on a path in the woods, "...it was the lyric about how the difference between you and me is our entire history... it changed my week."

{studio}
i'm in the studio! i will have music to send you home with by the end of the year! jason lanthrop of trash180 and calliope is tag teaming with project with me. it's all feeling good and right. click here for a new mp3!

{magdalena's tea house} - lansing, mi
people, this place is amazing! go see a show there. take off your shoes if you want. the room is beautiful, the drinks are tasty - the atmosphere: comfy comfy comfy. last night i saw seth bernard play with daisy may and drew howard. one of the best shows i've seen in awhile. i recommend you click the links ;)

07/10/04

so... i'm not so good with the news updates.

sorry about that.

i do have some news though - besides playing a couple gigs this month. including one very special pre fest faux fest! click on the flyer! ->

here is the plan: now that all copies of more to me are officially sold and gone, and i am officially done coming up with reasons why i'm not ready to record a new CD, i'll be heading into the studio in the next couple months. heads up for a CD release some time in oct/nov.

i'm currently working on fundraising plans for this project, if you have ideas or would like to help, please drop me a line.

04/03/04

spring is here - even though it might snow tomorrow.

AND i'm opening for alix olson this week! --bonus! see details here

AND ladyfest lansing is right around the corner - a pass for the whole weekend is only $25 if you buy in advance...

02/25/04

working on/thinking about v.3 of the website...stay tuned

new gigs coming up
a new song
new mp3s

and more coming...

i hope everyone is doing well and thinking SPRING

9/27/03

well, it looks like this little update is turning out to be a somewhat monthly thing. i'm trying anyway. i haven't been playing a tons of shows lately - other, yet not more important, more demanding things have been sucking up my time and energy. but that will soon change!

i have a couple gigs lined up for october and some possiblities for november and december..

but even cooler..finally scraped the $ together to set up my home computer for recording - so look for some bonus-like mp3s for your listening pleasure in the near future!

help me out a little here - what would you like to see on this site?

8/28/03

i thought it was about the time that i put a little something new up here. i have been slacking. but just not in the laying on your couch avoiding all responsibilty slacking.
i've been busy moving and working and playing a few shows here an there. soon, my goal is to make my "office" a mini-folksinger-studio so i can get on to the more important things in life.
a spent a week at the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival earlier this month and saw some very amazing things - one was a performance by libby kirkpatrick - i can't stop singing this song. so i learned it. maybe i'll be able to sing it for some people some time. she rocks.
in the meantime, i am going to take a little ride to chicago with my friends and while i'm there, i'm going to get up on the stage at the heartland cafe to warm up the crowd for ms. pamela means. a day doesn't get much better.

6/12/03

i've always been indecisive. nothing new there.

i changed my mind once again - i couldn't resist. next week i am going to head out west to denver (a new city for me!) with sarah and carmen and our comrads to Ladyfest Out West!

a rockin line-up, let me tell you. you should check it out.

i've put a few more details about our trip here.

Just can't wait to get on the road again
The life I love is makin' music with my friends
And I can't wait to get on the road again

as always, thanks for caring enough to come here and read this.

i appreciate you!

5/19/03

  • let's see... what things are happening. it's been a while since i posted here last and i've been thinking about it - i decided that i no longer want to use bullets in this section. this will be the last one.

I've tried for a good part of my life to be the type of person who is organized enough to keep lists. i figure that if i haven't been able to do it by now, that it's just not me. therefore, no more bullets.
last month, me, carmen and sarah played at espresso royale, outside in the little enclosed, yet not enclosed area. there were even a couple special guests! a lot of people showed up and made it a really good time...so we are going to do it again...june 7th, here are more details.
...something else cool that's happened lately - i was lucky to be a big part of planning a very cool evening that took place over the weekend in Lansing - a concert with Holly Near & Cris Williamson. it is a hell of a lot of work to put on a show like that. but so important.
i cannot help but be entirely grateful to these women who have been out there traveling and performing and making change and paving the way for us for 30 years.

i think i just got an idea for a song...

peace,
kate

4/21/03:

  • i am an official member of cd baby. wanna go there and write a review for me?
  • i changed a few things around - a few colors here and there, added a pic or two...all with a clove of garlic jammed in my ear. (gotta love those ear infections)

4/19/03:

  • a new gig! i'll be doing a round robin with sarah stollak and carmen paradise on may 3rd...details
  • ladyfest was amazing!
not to rub it in or anything, but all of you that weren't there, you missed out!
  • it's been a week now and i think i am finally recovered. the music, the impromptu barbecues, the sunny afternoons in old town, the amazingly cool women i've never met before (and some i have) and some rockin' afterhour parties. can't beat it.
  • although it was a great time, there were a lot of women who WEREN'T there that should have been. don't they know how lucky they are to have a Ladyfest in their own town!?!? all i have to say is, next year, it's going to be bigger and you better be there!

3/10/03:

  • we've been back for a bit longer than 24 hours. The tour was as much as i could have ever asked for. some really good shows, some really good times. Some really great people. i have to say that the show at dumba (a queer co-op in Brooklyn) was a strong highlight. and i learned a lot.
  • i learned that anything is possible as long as you have a map.
  • i learned that you can travel and not eat fast food.
  • i learned that priceline.com is a wonderful thing.
  • i learned that just because it's 60 degrees in Pittsburgh, doesn't mean that it won't be shockingly freezing just an hour and a half west.
  • i learned to not get out of the car without a coat on in Ohio.
  • i learned that i love to travel and play music - what a great job.

2/26/03:

  • we are leaving in 3 days. 3 short days.
  • The kick-off feast/concert was more successful than we could have ever imagined! So many wonderful people in one room...thank you so much to all of you for making it an amazing night and an amazing beginning.
  • we have some more gigs finalized (i've always procrastinated) ...including a gig in Baltimore opening for Sam Shaber and a very cool party gig with Joey Murphy in Pittsburgh. ...details
  • More good news...punk-folker Gina Young is going to join us at Dumba in Brooklyn!

1/29/03:

  • the tour is halfway planned! oh, did i mention that ms. Sarah Stollak and I are going on the road? So far we have dates in New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. We also plan on playing for people in Boston and philly...details.
  • Reality is setting in. We have finally realized that we don't have the money to take off work and go on the road! But we want to so bad - so we are asking for some help. Plans are in the work for a fundraising party/concert/food extravaganza to be held Sunday Feb. 23 at the Creole Gallery in Lansing. Can't beat that! More info to come...

12/23/02:
  • take a look at this website i create every other week with a guy named greg. it's called punktzine.com. featured in this week's new voices section are some paintings I've done.

12/16/02:

  • i get to play with two of my favorite people to play with! it's been so long since we've all played together - Ryan (Kipp from Atlanta) and Nick (Koby from this town) and I will be at the new Espresso Royale in East Lansing on December 28th.

12/10/02:

  • got my face on the cover of a weekly paper.
  • there was an interview too.
  • you may or may not notice the new look. it took me months in between all the other crap. i hope you like it.
